She/Her
As many of you already know I hail from Newfoundland. I grew up with my parents, Hazel and Harold French and 3 brothers (two of which are now deceased). There remains my eldest brother, Woodrow, and myself and we continue to be very close, and Newfoundland will always be home to me. I have one daughter and two granddaughters.
We grew up attending an Anglican Church (then Church of England) St. Michael’s and All Angels in St. John’s and I attended St. Michael’s School until grade 6. Back in those days, each religion had their own church and school until it was changed, making every school, except for the Roman Catholic schools’ public. After grade 6 my family moved about 18 miles from St. John’s to a place called Kelligrews in the Town of Conception Bay South.
After I was married and left home, I continued to attend chapels on different bases (as my husband was military) and served on various Chapel Committees (same as Vestry), I was President of the Ladies Guild and helped with social events, etc. After eventually moving into Edmonton, from the base in Lancaster Park I started to attend Good Shepherd, at the time, Rev. Lee Bezanson was the minister there. It was here at Good Shepherd, that I served on Vestry, on the search committee for a new minister and on the social committee assisting with a few special teas and setting up and arranging items for several of our silent auctions. It was here that I first became a Lay Reader which I have thoroughly enjoyed, my favorite parts are serving on Sunday mornings and visiting our shut ins and bringing them Holy Communion.
I think God has allowed me to use my gift of connecting with seniors both in my personal work life and in my church life. I am truly blessed to be able to serve within the Community of Good Shepherd and I thank God daily for the opportunity he has given me.
We respectfully acknowledge that we are on Treaty 6 territory. In the spirit of peace, friendship and understanding we walk alongside our Indigenous brothers and sisters on the traditional meeting ground and home of Indigenous Peoples, including Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis and Nakota Sioux. We give thanks for their hospitality and the opportunity to share common ground.
