VBS Week 4, Pride Parade & Backpack Blessings

Good Shepherd Anglican Church
Weekly Round Up August 19, 2026
The 13th Sunday After Pentecost

The 13th Sunday After Pentecost

Vestry Meeting, VBS Week 4, Backpack Blessing

Come to church this Sunday to welcome Rev. Jordan back. We are truly grateful to Rev. Lee, Rev. Gary, Rev. Ifuero, and Rev. Stacey for guiding our worship this summer. We've had a lot going on at Good Shepherd this season and have enjoyed seeing everyone through all of the sunny and soggy days the Season after Pentecost has brought us.

The Vestry will be meeting after the service this Sunday. As a reminder, all members of the parish are welcome to sit in on Vestry meetings. You'll get to see what plans have been progressing these last few months and learn about goals that we have for the fall. Coming to the Vestry meetings is an excellent opportunity to see what goes in to caring for our campus, our congregation, and our community.

The featured photo this week is titled "Celebration of Peter with keys and rooster" from a Holy Week procession in Ivisan, Philippines, 2006

School Supply Donation Drive

School Supply Donation Drive

Let's Get Ready for School Together - Wednesday, August 5, 2026

Help Natalie and our Youth & Family Ministries prepare back to school supply kits for children in Castle Downs.

This year we are making school supply kits using Grade 3 & Grade 6 supply lists as a guide. See the link below for the school supply lists.

Did you know that even keeping track of sales and shopping for supplies at the dollar store the average cost of school supplies for one student is over $75, without buying a backpack or indoor shoes? Each year as students need a new item or two the price goes up by $5-$7. For one grade 6 student supplies can add up to $105! Thank you for joining us in making back to school a little less stressful for families in need.

If you would prefer to 'sponsor' a student through a financial donation to the school supply drive, please add the note "School Supply Drive" to your offertory envelope. Donations can also be made by Interac e-transfer to treasurerer@goodshepanglican.org, be sure to write "School Supply Drive" in the memo section.

Offertory is a great way to get involved at Good Shepherd, join our team of offertory collectors today, email Michelle at parishadmin@goodshepanglican.org or Marguerite at envelopesecretary@goodshepanglican.org to learn more.

ACW High Tea Helpers

Help prepare for the High Tea on Sept. 12, 2026. We need a set up team from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM to help set the tables and finish the last of the food prep. For folks stuck with the an opening shift that Saturday, extra hands are always much appreciated from 4:00 PM -6:00 PM to help with cleaning and packing up dishes. Home bakers are also invited to sign up and share a favourite baked treat. Volunteer sign ups are at the church, or you can speak with Kathy H, Linda D, Michelle, or Marguerite for more information.

Thanks & Prayers

This week we particularly thank our cemetery team, Harold, Chuck, Leslie, Pray, and Thay for their stewardship of Christ Church Cemetery at Poplar Lake.

I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you. Phil 1:3-4

Today and during the week we pray for:

  • Those who are sick, suffering or in need:
    • In our parish: Shaunna, Brennan, Duleep, Kathleen T, Shan, Grace S, Anne, Bill, Betty Ann, Glenda, Christina, Glen, and Clarence.

    • Our Bishop, Steve; our Dean, Alex; our Archdeacons; our Canons; and support staff.
    • For Archdeacons: Chelsy, Jonathan, Travis, and Jordan.
    • For St. George, Edmonton: their Rector, Madeleine;  and their Deacon, Mark.
  • In our partner Diocese of Buyé:
    • For Mwumba Parish: and their Rector, Frederic.
  • Our siblings in Christ:
    • From Treaty 6 and Treaty 8 First Nations, from the Métis Nation of Alberta, and from the Métis Settlements in Alberta.
    • For Ermineskin Cree Nation.
  • We pray for this parish of the Good Shepherd
    • For Jordan, our rector; Stacey, our Deacon; Lee, Gary, and Ifuero, our Honorary Assistants; for Anthony and Helen, our lay evangelists; for Ruby and Stefan, our lay readers; for Talesa, our Music Director; Natalie our Youth and Family Ministries coordinator; and for Michelle, our Parish Administrator.

    • For those protesting for racial justice, civil and human rights, and all people experiencing violence throughout the world. May the Lord comfort all those affected and may we, as a people, band together in our faith.
    • We pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
  • For all those impacted by natural disasters:
    • For people impacted by extreme weather throughout the world. May the Lord shelter all of those in need, keep our rescue workers safe, and guide our hands and minds as we work to offer aid and prayers.
  • For all whose lives have enriched our own, especially Mark, even though they have died and for those who mourn.

We thank you Lord for all the blessings of this life, for listening to our prayers and petitions, and for always doing what is right for us in your eyes. We thank you for Your blessing on our needs and all whose lives are closely linked with ours: we ask that our Heavenly Father grant that we may bring others to know Jesus, our Lord and Christ, and love one another as He loves us, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

AMEN

Information

Prayer List - If you know someone who should be prayed for publicly, please send their name to us at parishadmin@goodshepanglican.org. The list will be refreshed on a regular basis. If you know someone whose prayer request is more private, or who is unknown to the congregation, please ask the Prayer Chain to pray for them by contacting Kathy Lake at kalake@telus.net.

Forward Day by Day - Most of you may know already that our books arrived! Pick up a copy at the back of the Nave for a $2 donation that supports our ability to continue ordering printed copies. You may view the daily devotion online for free here: https://prayer.forwardmovement.org/fdd

Phone & Tablet Use During Worship - Please remember to put cell phones and tablets on silent or vibrate during worship services. Be mindful when using phones and tablets during services, we know thay can be a helpful tool for folks of all ages and in some cases have become a necessary part of health monitoring and accessibility. They are also difficult to step away from and can distract others, as well as ourselves. To the extent that is possible, we invite worshippers to put devices away and step into God's presence during worship. Allow yourself the space to be fully present with Our Lord and with your siblings in Christ for this one hour each week. In an emergency, please step into the narthex to take a call or otherwise manage the noise of your device. Thank you for your dedication to worship and your kindness to your fellow worshippers.

Parking Reminder - As our Sunday attendance grows, our parking lot is filling up! While this is good news, it comes with some challenges. Can you please ensure that you are parked inside the lines so that we maximize our space? If you can walk a bit further, can you park at the Sobey's lot to leave space for those who need a shorter journey? Can you leave the visitor parking at the front for visitors who are new to the church? If the parking lot is full, can you be mindful of your driving and not try to force your way into a space too small for you? Think of how you would feel, your first Sunday trying a new church, and someone crashes into your car because they were trying to squeeze into a space too small for them. As we welcome new members, let's make sure our welcome includes making space for parking. Thank you so much for supporting our welcoming culture.

Memorial Bricks - Anyone wishing to purchase a Memorial Brick in the Chapel at Good Shepherd, please speak to Harold or Kathy Lake. A Memorial Brick costs $75.00, and is a lovely and lasting way to honour the memory of your loved ones.

Little Free Pantry - Any donations you bring for the pantry can be placed directly into the pantry, if it is full we have a box in the narthex that items can be placed for restocking. As a reminder, please keep donations to shelf stable pantry items, and keep in mind how packaging or food might be impacted by hot or cold weather. We are in particular need of water and to-go or single serving foods and snacks that can be enjoyed without any cooking needed.
